Top of Mind

Let's talk about the Trump Accounts
If you watched the Super Bowl on Sunday night, you probably saw people playing football... and an intriguing ad telling parents to expect "free money" from the government to help their children plan for the future.

But what does that actually mean?
Well, Trump Accounts are new, IRA-style investment accounts for children. Money in the account grows tax-deferred and must be invested in a low-cost U.S. stock index fund. The funds generally can’t be used until the child turns 18, unless you want to face major penalties.

How do you get the $1,000 starting bonus?
Well, it's only available for children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028.

How do you open an account?
By filing IRS Form 4547, initially with your 2025 tax return. An online portal is expected later, and we're sure it'll be a breeze to use as most online government portals are.

🧒 All these children and no one to take care of them
A new Care.com report found that families use an average of four different caregiving arrangements, and 45% of parents still say they don’t have enough help. About one-third of parents spend three months or more searching for care, and many report missing work or turning down career opportunities because of gaps. How do parents say we can make it better? Expanded tax credits and employer support. Btw, did you know Norway offers nearly a year of paid parental pay?

🎰 Teen boys are gambling a lot
More than 1 in 3 teen boys say they’ve gambled in the past year, often through sports betting apps, online games, or loot boxes that resemble gambling. Researchers worry early exposure could increase the risk of addiction and financial problems later on, and honestly, we don't think we needed researchers to tell us that. Here's how you can prevent it.

📱 New guidance on screen time
For the first time in ten years, the AAP released new guidelines for screen time, and they're more forgiving than you might think. They say to focus less on strict screen time limits and more on how screens are used. Experts now emphasize co-viewing, content quality, and making time for offline activities, rather than counting minutes.

🚸 How to tell if your child is ready for kindergarten
Experts say readiness isn’t just about knowing letters and numbers. Skills like emotional regulation, following instructions, and social interaction matter just as much. Parents can look for signs like curiosity, independence, and the ability to handle routines. More here.

Bites with Kiyah

Our dinner for tomorrow’s lunch series continues with...

Big-Batch Farro Bowls with Roasted Sweet Potatoes & Sausage
The beauty of this salad is that farro doesn't get soggy. So you can batch prepare and it stays pleasant to eat.

You’ll need:

  • Farro

  • Sweet potatoes (or root vegetable combo)

  • Italian sausage (or chicken sausage)

  • Olive oil, salt, pepper

  • Optional: greens, pesto, vinaigrette

How to make it:

  1. Cook farro according to package directions in a saucepan with a lid. Drain using a fine mesh strainer.

  2. Roast cubed sweet potatoes (and any other winter root vegetable of your liking) at 425°F with olive oil, salt, and pepper until browned, turning once or twice to ensure nice even cooking.

  3. Roast or pan-cook sausage until cooked through, then slice.

  4. Combine everything in a big bowl.

Tomorrow’s lunch: Eat it cold like a grain salad, or warm it up and add a fried egg. Drizzle with pesto or vinaigrette (my personal favorite is a tahini dressing) and call it a day.
