Can I please have a gene-edited PB&J sandwich?
A company called Nurtured Nuts plans to launch products made from CRISPR gene-edited peanuts starting in 2027, featuring marketing slogans like "all of the flavor, none of the allergies."
But allergists claim the slogans are a bit misleading. Despite reducing specific proteins linked to severe reactions, these gene-edited peanuts are NOT safe for people with peanut allergies.
Peanuts contain multiple proteins that can trigger an allergic response. While the gene-editing technology lowers certain target proteins, it does not eliminate all allergenic components. It's also important to note that fine print on the company's website does warn the product is not intended for people with peanut allergies, but given the potential dangers, it should probably be in LARGE print.
If you are looking for a peanut butter alternative that's actually safe for people with peanut allergies, we've heard good things about WowButter.
And we realize this is not important, but Nurtured Nuts? That's the name they came up with? Really? They want people walking in the supermarket and flagging down a worker to ask, "Uh, yes, where might I find the nurtured nuts?"
