A new study suggests ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) in products marketed for babies and toddlers may be linked to less healthy nutrition profiles and potential long-term health risks.
About half the baby foods examined were classified as ultra-processed, including snacks like crackers, puffs, and sweetened yogurts. These foods are designed to be highly appealing, and experts worry early exposure could shape taste preferences toward sugar and artificial flavors.
This is particularly concerning when you factor in this study, which claims toddlers eating high amounts of processed meats and sugary snacks have lower IQ scores as they age.

A baby horse can walk one hour after entering the world, and they can gallop within the first 24 hours. Meanwhile, a human baby can't even hold its head up the first month or two. Why is this? Evolutionary tradeoffs. A long-standing theory, the “obstetric dilemma,” suggests large brains and pelvises adapted for upright walking limit how developed babies can be at birth. As a result, humans are born earlier in their development, with immature motor skills and brain growth still underway. Researchers now see this as a complex balance of evolutionary factors. Nearly half of young U.S. parents say screen time is making it harder to connect with their kids, according to a survey of 2,000 millennial and Gen Z parents. Children average about four hours of daily screen use, which parents link to distraction, lower activity levels, irritability, and sleep challenges. But even with all these obstacles, millennials still spend more time with their kids than past generations.

Bites with Kiyah
Creamy White Bean & Kale Soup (Sausage Optional)
This is the kind of soup that somehow tastes better the next day. It’s cozy without being heavy, and it travels well.
You’ll need:
Canned white beans
Onion, garlic
Chicken or veggie broth
Kale
Optional: sausage
How to make it:
In a Dutch oven (this one's my fav), sauté onion and garlic in olive oil.
If using sausage, brown it first, then remove and set aside.
Add beans and broth. Simmer 10–15 minutes.
Blend part of the soup using an immersion blender until creamy.
Stir in kale and cooked sausage (if using). Simmer until kale is tender.
Finish with salt, pepper, and olive oil.
Optional add-ins/extras
Adding a squeeze of lemon just before serving will brighten this soup. A teaspoon of pesto or grated Parmesan cheese will also add a nice flavor profile.
Tomorrow’s lunch: Pack in a thermos. Add dinner roll or good crusty bread. Feel extremely put together.
