Fluoride or hydroxyapatite? Dentists weigh in
It's trendy to be concerned about fluoride, even though decades of research show most of the fears surrounding it are unfounded. In fact, fluoridated drinking water was named one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.

But even still, some parents are concerned their kids are getting too much of it, and influencers are raving about a fluoride-free toothpaste containing a mineral called hydroxyapatite.

Dentists say early research looks promising. Some studies suggest hydroxyapatite performs similarly to fluoride in preventing tooth decay and easing sensitivity by filling microscopic crevices in teeth. However, experts caution that the data is still limited. Most studies are small, short-term, or conducted on people with low risk for cavities.

Another thing to keep in mind is that hydroxyapatite toothpastes are often significantly more expensive per ounce. Most dental professionals agree: unless you have a specific reason to avoid fluoride, sticking with traditional fluoride toothpaste is your best bet.

Driven by a desire for quick relief, patients often push for these drugs even for viral colds. Health experts warn this harmless-seeming deception drives dangerous drug-resistant "superbugs," which already cause 50,000 U.S. deaths annually. Read the full study.
