Is your kid entitled? 5 warning signs

The biggest health challenges for all women

TOP OF MIND

Are you raising an entitled kid?
That question feels more like an accusation, but we promise... it's not! We're all just trying our best out here, and as long as you're learning, you're growing.

So, let's grow together. According to Psychology Today, there are five warning signs to look out for when it comes to entitlement in children.

  1. They can't handle being frustrated or not getting something right away, which results in them giving up on tasks.

  2. They lack problem-solving skills, and instead demand others to fix the problem for them.

  3. Poor work ethic, and the expectation they can get whatever they want instantly.

  4. Social problems and lacking the ability to be on a team.

  5. Lots of temper tantrums and meltdowns.

A lot of those are probably obvious to you, but what's not obvious is what's causing it and how to correct it.

Let's talk about that.

The important bits
Many experts are pointing all their fingers at technology. Multiple studies have shown that kids' reliance on technology is a major problem. Last week, researchers out of Canada published a new study on distracting kids with smartphones or tablets.

Over 300 parents took part in the study, and according to the researchers, the results suggested, "if parents regularly offer a digital device to their child to calm them or to stop a tantrum, the child won't learn to regulate their emotions."

And we know a lot of parents are doing that. A previous study revealed around 65% of parents use mobile devices to keep their children calm in public places.

Screens used as a calming strategy becomes a vicious cycle, right? It often works very well in the short term. But what we learned from studies like this … is that in the long term, it actually creates more of a problem because then it's harder for that child to learn any new skills without the screen.

Add in the fact that everything online is "instant," and we're basically teaching our kids that they shouldn't have to wait for anything.

What's it all mean?
Destroy the internet!!!!!

No, it just means we have to be more mindful. Here are a few guidelines to help you set some limits on technology in your household.

Also, maybe we should be encouraging our children to build more? A school in Florida has created a new program informed by Harvard University research, which aims to get children building and tinkering in the classroom. Read more about that here. Maybe ask your kids' school about it!

👨‍🏫 Students are attacking teachers on TikTok
Seventh and eighth graders in a small town in Pennsylvania created fake TikTok accounts of their teachers and posted "disparaging, lewd, racist and homophobic videos." Around 20 educators at the school were targeted in the attack, which the NY Times is calling, "the first known mass attack of its kind in the U.S." In some cases, they used personal photos of their teachers and even their teachers' family members.

Last week, we asked you what you were doing for the 4th of July, and nearly 50% of you said you were staying home. In a close second was, "watching my city's firework show." No one admitted to eating 10 hot dogs.
